Glaucoma Awareness Cyclothon 2026 is a community-driven health awareness event organized in Thiruvananthapuram to highlight the importance of early detection and prevention of glaucoma, a serious eye condition often referred to as the “silent thief of sight.”
The event is typically conducted as part of global initiatives like World Glaucoma Week, which aims to educate people about the risks of untreated glaucoma and encourage regular eye check-ups. The cyclothon brings together healthcare professionals, cycling enthusiasts, students, and members of the public to ride through the city while spreading awareness about eye health and preventive care.
The ride usually begins at prominent landmarks such as Kanakakunnu Palace and passes through key areas of the city before concluding near coastal locations like Shangumugham Beach. Organized by medical institutions and eye care organizations including Precise Speciality Eye Care in collaboration with health associations and cycling communities, the event attracts hundreds of participants committed to promoting public health awareness. In previous editions, more than 700 cyclists participated, making it one of the largest glaucoma awareness rides in the region.
Apart from the cycling rally, the event often features awareness talks by ophthalmologists, public health messages, and pledges encouraging people—especially those over the age of 40—to undergo regular glaucoma screenings. Medical experts emphasize that glaucoma can cause irreversible vision loss if left undetected, but early diagnosis and treatment can significantly slow its progression. By combining fitness, community engagement, and health education, the cyclothon serves as a powerful platform to reach a wide audience and promote preventive eye care.
The Cyclothon for Glaucoma Awareness in Thiruvananthapuram is more than just a cycling event—it is a meaningful public health initiative that unites citizens, doctors, and volunteers in a collective effort to protect vision and encourage proactive healthcare. Through participation, advocacy, and awareness campaigns, the event continues to inspire communities to take steps toward safeguarding their eyesight and supporting the fight against preventable blindness.
