Attuvela Mahotsavam is a spectacular traditional water festival held annually in Vadayar, Kottayam district, Kerala, centred around the revered Elankavu Bhagavathy Temple and celebrated with great devotion and local grandeur.
Rooted in legend, the festival symbolises the welcome ceremony for the Goddess of Kodungalloor as she visits her sister, the Goddess of Elankavu, and is observed in the Malayalam month of Meenam (roughly March–April). Over two vibrant days, beautifully illuminated temple replicas and decoratively festooned canoes glide across the waters of the Muvattupuzha River, accompanied by the compelling rhythms of traditional temple percussion, creating a breathtaking visual and cultural spectacle.
Attuvela Mahotsavam is not just about the stunning water procession; it’s a celebration of community faith, tradition, and Kerala’s rich temple heritage. The highlight of the festival is the grand nautical parade where a large, vibrantly lit replica of the temple sails alongside numerous smaller canoes, drawing devotees and visitors to witness the fusion of spirituality and pageantry along the riverbanks. Alongside the water carnival, traditional rituals, pujas, and cultural performances enrich the festival atmosphere, inviting participants to connect with both the divine and the region’s age-old traditions.
