  • The Arattupuzha Pooram is one of the oldest and most revered temple festivals in Kerala, celebrated annually at the Sree Sastha Temple in the village of Arattupuzha near Thrissur.

Often called the “Mother of all Poorams,” the festival is believed to have a history stretching back thousands of years and is regarded as a grand “Devamela,” or conclave of deities. During this week-long celebration, idols from numerous nearby temples ceremoniously arrive in procession to pay homage to the presiding deity, Lord Sastha (Ayyappa), symbolizing a divine gathering of gods and goddesses. The festival typically takes place in the Malayalam month of Meenam (March–April) and attracts thousands of devotees, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts who come to witness its rich blend of ritual, music, and pageantry.

The highlight of the festivities is the majestic procession of caparisoned elephants accompanied by powerful traditional percussion ensembles such as Panchavadyam and the grand Sasthavinte Melam, which features hundreds of artists performing in unison. The spectacle of decorated elephants carrying glittering umbrellas, the rhythmic thunder of chenda drums, ritual torch processions, and vibrant temple ceremonies create an atmosphere of devotion and cultural grandeur.

The celebrations culminate in the sacred “Arattu” ritual, where the deity is ceremonially bathed at a nearby river ghat, marking the spiritual conclusion of the festival. With its deep-rooted traditions, vibrant rituals, and massive participation of temples and devotees, Arattupuzha Pooram stands as a timeless symbol of Kerala’s temple culture and communal harmony.
