  • Painkuni Festival is a vibrant traditional festival celebrated primarily in the state of Kerala, India, with its most iconic observance at Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram.

The festival marks the holy month of Meenam (usually falling in March–April) and is rooted in century-old temple traditions. “Painkuni” refers to the ritualistic offering and observance associated with concluding the annual temple festival season. At the heart of the celebrations is Aaraattu — a sacred ceremonial bath of the deity’s idol in the nearby waters, accompanied by grand processions, traditional music, and deep devotional participation from thousands of devotees. The festival beautifully blends spiritual fervour and cultural richness, making it one of Kerala’s most significant temple festivals.

Painkuni’s atmosphere is deeply religious yet festive, bringing together pilgrims and locals to witness a range of ceremonial activities that underscore Kerala’s temple heritage. The highlight is the Aaraattu procession — an elaborate ritual where the idol of the presiding deity is taken outdoors, accompanied by caparisoned elephants, traditional percussion ensembles like Panchavadyam and Chenda melam, and chanting crowds. Devotees also participate in seeveli (holy circumambulations), offering prayers and blessings, while temple precincts and streets come alive with cultural performances and age-old rituals passed down through generations. For many, Painkuni is not just a festival but a meaningful blend of devotion, community celebration, and cultural identity.
