  • Machattu Mamangam is a vibrant and historic temple festival celebrated annually in the village of Vadakkumkara near Wadakkanchery in Thrissur.

The festival takes place at the centuries-old Machattu Thiruvanikavu Temple and is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy. Steeped in legend, the celebration commemorates a local tale in which the goddess appeared before villagers, blessing the land and its people. To honor this divine event, the community gathers every year to conduct the grand Mamangam, transforming the village into a colorful spectacle of devotion, tradition, and celebration.

The highlight of Machattu Mamangam is the magnificent Kudamattom procession, where elaborately decorated horses and temple umbrellas are paraded through the streets, accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles and devotional chants. Residents enthusiastically decorate their homes, streets, and public spaces with colorful paper ornaments, creating a festive atmosphere across the entire village. The celebration also features rituals, cultural performances, and community feasts, drawing thousands of devotees and visitors. Known for its strong sense of local participation and vibrant visuals, Machattu Mamangam stands as a proud symbol of Kerala’s rich temple traditions and collective cultural heritage.
