Guruvayur Aanayottam is a unique and time-honoured temple ritual held at the Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple, marking the grand commencement of the annual Guruvayur Utsavam.
This spectacular elephant race is one of Kerala’s most distinctive temple traditions, where decorated elephants run from a designated starting point toward the temple’s eastern entrance amid the cheers of thousands of devotees. The event usually takes place in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February–March) and draws large crowds who gather to witness the powerful and symbolic start of the ten-day temple festival.
The race is not merely a spectacle but a sacred ritual with deep spiritual significance. The elephant that first reaches the temple entrance is declared the winner and receives the honour of carrying the golden idol of Lord Guruvayurappan during the festival’s main processions. The ceremony begins with traditional rituals, including the handing over of ceremonial bells to the mahouts, followed by the blowing of a conch to signal the start of the race. With its blend of devotion, pageantry, and cultural heritage, Guruvayoor Aanayottam stands as a vibrant symbol of Kerala’s temple traditions and the deep bond between the deity, the temple, and its revered elephants.
