  • Attukal Pongala is one of Kerala’s most revered and visually striking temple festivals, held annually at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram.

Celebrated in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February–March), the festival is dedicated to Goddess Attukal Bhagavathy, an incarnation of the divine feminine power. The ten-day festival reaches its grand climax on the day of Pongala, when millions of women devotees gather across the city to prepare a sacred offering of sweet rice, jaggery, and coconut in earthen pots. The ritual is performed in open spaces, streets, courtyards, and temple premises, transforming the entire city into a vast, unified sacred space of devotion and faith.

Recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world’s largest annual gathering of women, Attukal Pongala stands as a powerful symbol of devotion, unity, and cultural identity in Kerala. Devotees believe that offering Pongala to the goddess brings prosperity, protection, and fulfillment of wishes. The festival is not only a religious event but also a vibrant cultural spectacle, marked by temple rituals, traditional music, processions, and community participation. As the sacred fires are lit simultaneously across the city, the air fills with chants and the aroma of the offerings, creating an atmosphere of spiritual intensity and collective celebration that draws visitors from across India and beyond.
