Vishu signifies the start of a New Year in Kerala which is celebrated on April 14 every year. With more enthusiasm, joy, and hope, Vishu is celebrated widely all across Kerala.
"Vishukkani" and Vishukkaineetam are the most interesting customs in Vishu. On the auspicious day of Vishu, peoples see Vishukkani as the first sight of the New Year, for a peaceful and prosperous year ahead. Vishukkani involves various auspicious things like fruits, grain, vegetables, lamps, flowers, coconut, gold, mirror, Hindu holy books like Ramayanam or Bhagavatgita, etc. set in a large vessel with an image of Lord Krishna, kept in the puja room. VishuKaineetam is a tradition, elders give money to the youngsters. And different types of lip smacking dishes are prepared in every home, known as Vishu Sadhya.
The most significant aspect of this festival day is that the day and the night are equal in Kerala. Vishu is also celebrated in other states but with different names. In Assam Vishu festival is known as Bihu where as in Punjab the festival is recalled as Baisakhi.
