Onam is the most celebrated harvest festival of Kerala. Onam celebration lasts over 10 days, starts from Atham (Hasta) nakshatra, the first day of Onam, and ends on Thiruvonam (Shravana) nakshatra - the most important day of Onam festivities.
Onam usually falls in late August or early September (in the Malayala month of Chingam). This year Onam 2021 in Kerala will be celebrated from Friday, 20 August to Monday, 23 August. The floral designs, known as pookkalam, are an integral part of this festival. During these days, people believe that the great King Mahabali visits their home, who make different types of designs on the ground with flowers to invite King Mahabali and people gift and wear new clothes known as 'Onakkodi', and prepare traditional feasts called ‘Onasadya’.
Additionally, there are different cultural activities like boat races called Vallam Kali, Tiger dances called Pulikali, worship the God or Onathappan, Tug of War, Thumbi Thullal or women’s dance ritual, Mask dance or Kummattikali, Onathallu or martial arts, Onavillu/music, Onapottan (costumes), folk songs, Thiruvathira Kali, etc.
